Soft reset of magnetometer in Android -

I have noticed that by shaking or tapping the phone (a SE Xperia X10 Mini) several times the magnetometer is again Is there any way to do software-wise in a more controlled way?

I do not think so. This seems to be some kind of "hardware reset": When the magnetometer is confused with the magnetic field (a loudspeaker is usually sufficient), then it requires physical movement to return to the "plain position".
