viewstate - Why does asp.net wrap the page in a form? -

I am a PHP developer whose ASPN Work on projects and I am wondering why each page is wrapped in a parva. It just does not make sense to me.

Besides, what's with all the hidden input fields, especially "View State".

A Using the viewstate is a part of being a decent ASP.NET programmer, and not because the default is used everywhere that causes a lot of bloat in the downloaded page.
